Note that the VIUS category stands for "Vehicle Inventory and Use' survey, which serves to "measure the physical and operational characteristics of the U.S. truck population" per the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The Federal Highway Administration uses the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) to classify vehicles as light or medium-duty. 

So what is considered light-duty and medium-duty for towing purposes?

• Light-Duty: Any vehicle under 10,000 lbs.
• Medium-Duty: Any vehicle between 10,001 lbs. and 26,000 lbs.
